There have been numerous articles and books written on Magnesium and how it works in the body, and the critical importance of this mineral to the overall metabolic functions in the body. The conclusion; according to numerous researchers is, our society is deficient and the association between cardiovascular disease and Magnesium deficiency is real.
What hits home is the relationship of cardiovascular symptoms and incidences and our endurance community which is less than “heartwarming”. Cardiovascular disease is the #1 ailment that is sidelining athletes in all age brackets and sports, so much so, that the NCAA has a cardiovascular platform to include education and research addressing the issue to help prevent athlete heart-related occurrences.
The 2015 American Heart Association report noted that heart disease is the number one global cause of death, currently estimated at 17.3 million annually. This number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030.
Our endurance community had dedicated a session at the Endurance Exchange Conference to discuss the topic of heart-related issues with Gale Bernhardt and Dr. Larry Creswell. We followed up with the Dr following the presentation to inquire to the use of Magnesium in his practice. Dr Creswell disclosed he uses Magnesium with many if not all of his patients. During the Endurance Exchange presentation, he shared the subtle symptoms of heart-related issues and 70% of these subtle symptoms were also associated with Magnesium deficiency symptoms.

It is somewhat perplexing to know if the speakers are here to help identify and prevent cardiac events, why wouldn’t the use of this particular mineral be discussed and or disclosed as being used in cardiovascular treatment.
During my island stay and networking at Ironman World Championships, I spoke to numerous elite athletes about their nutrition plans and health status. The fittest human beings on earth, or one would think.
The thought-provoking takeaway following numerous conversations with random athletes was an increase in heart-related health issues and a heightened concern for each of the individual endurance athletes.
Cardiovascular issues and other muscle-related diseases are emerging in Professionals and Age grouper athletes now more than ever before.

- 3 Types to be aware of
- A paroxysm is a sudden episode of an abnormally fast heartbeat.
- The episodes in persistent A-fib are continuous and last for more than 7 days.
- Long-term persistent:
- When medications, cardioversion, catheter ablation, and other methods are unable to convert A-fib back to a normal rhythm, and it seems unlikely that this conversion will be possible, doctors refer to the condition as long-term persistent A-fib.
- People with this diagnosis will have agreed with their doctor to stop attempting the conversion.
The most common heart issue is AFib and is hereditary in many cases and also can be attributed to an evolution of electrolyte imbalance due to status of health and or diseases.
